A Message from our President and Board Chair
When someone turns to us for help, we don’t see what they can’t do. We don’t see someone with disability; we see the possibilities of what they could do. We consider it our job to help each person we serve become the best version of themselves. To quote Edgar Helms, Founder of Goodwill Industries: “It’s ability, not disability that counts.”
In 2015 we helped more than 1300 individuals realize their fullest potential with intensive life-changing assistance. With this help they can reach their goals of employment and independence,
including learning a new skill, getting a job or participating in our after-school program.
The Good in Goodwill starts with each of you. We couldn’t do any of this without the help and support of all of you. You help us fulfill our mission to enhance the quality of life for people with disabilities and other challenges through employment, educational, social and recreational opportunities. With your help, our community grows healthier and stronger, one person at a time.
A Look Back on our Retail Operations
2015 was a year with its ups and downs. The first quarter of the year was plagued with weather related issues; hence total revenues were down over 5% from budget. By the end of the second quarter, stores rebounded and closed the gap on the budget shortfall. The third quarter showed sales stayed even with budget, but not enough to make up for lost ground. Going into the fourth quarter, things looked to be turning around as October’s results were a record breaking $1,5200,000 in sales (up 2.6% over budget). However that momentum did not continue, as November and December were both under budget. While the total revenue was up 2.3% from last year, budget revenues were down by 1.7%. Still, overall bottom line profits for the year were over $1.05 million dollars.
Our New Meriden Attended Donation Center
In June of 2015 we opened our seventh Goodwill Attended Donation Center on East Main Street in Meriden. A small free standing 900 square foot building was found. The landlord transformed the former Chinese takeout restaurant into an attractive convenient drop off center. Being among many fast food restaurants, this location should be an easy location for our donors to get in and out. The donations that come from this site, get broken down by category and sent directly to our New Britain store.

Coming Soon: Plainville Goodwill Store
In May, 2015 a Letter of Intent to lease was drafted and presented to the owner of a proposed shopping center in Plainville to build a brand new 14,000 square foot, free standing Goodwill Store and Donation Center. After some back and forth negotiations, the basic terms were approved. During the balance of the year, lease negotiations commenced. It took many drafts to get the language agreeable to both parties, but finally in March, 2016 the lease was signed. It is uncertain if the construction will start in the fall of 2016, or the spring of 2017. However, the design and layout will be our showcase store once it opens next year.
